Argan Oil: Argania spinosa is a cold pressed oil from Morocco. Although considered quite rare that is becoming well-known for its benefits and is most frequently in hair, body, nail, face and eye serums. Argan Oil is particularly good for helping to clear up scars from acne and stretch marks. It is rich in vitamin E, carotenes, antioxidants and essential fatty acids, making it great as an anti-aging treatment. It is quickly absorbed into skin because it is so rich in poly-unsaturated fatty acids, including linoleic acid, Omega 6, and natural tocopherols. It is a very nourishing, regenerating and protective oil that can be used in recipes for all skin types. Can also be used on its own at full strength or is a base in a blend of oils.
Avocado Oil: Persea americana. Avocado oil is a very rich thick that can be used to nourish and restore dry, dehydrated, and mature skin. It is most commonly blended with other oils due to its high content of vitamins A and E is especially good for skins suffering from eczema and psoriasis. Avocado is considered a very therapeutic oil because of its high concentrations of vitamins A, B, B, vitamins D and E, protein, pantothenic acid, and fatty acids. It can be used for all skin types to absorb into the upper layers of dry, dehydrated skin. It is known to improve elastin and skin as well. Avocado oil is best used in smaller ratios and skin serum blends because it is so rich.
Borage Oil: Borago officinalis. Borage seed oil is a thicker oil that appears almost clear in color. This is an oil that has an abundance of gamma linoleic acid (GLA), an important essential fatty acid that the body uses to manufacture prostaglandins. These are hormone like substances that help our body to balance and regulate cellular activity. Great for psoriasis and eczema but especially good for slowing the aging process and reversing sun damage from ultraviolet light.
Calendula Oil: Calendula officials. Used most often for slow healing wounds, bed sores, bruises, cuts, scratches, varicose or broken veins, eczema, gum inflammation, hemorrhoids, persistent ulcers and burns. A common mix is 5% infused calendula oil with 75% of a fixed oil. Calendula is beneficial when used alone on small areas such as facial broken veins or a baby’s bottom.
Camellia Oil: Cold Pressed Camellia sinensis. Camellia oil protects the skin from free radical damage, helps to refine mature skin, and nourishes the complexion making it a very popular ingredient in skin care products. It is easily absorbed by the skin so it doesn’t leave skin with a greasy feeling yet makes it feel soft and silky. Refrigerate after opening to keep it from going rancid.
Castor Oil: Cold pressed from Ricinus commumis seed. Castor Oil is a very stable thick carrier oil. It is also one of the most moisturising oils providing an excellent barrier from outside contaminants while locking moisture in the skin. It is protective and renowned for its ability to fade dark spots, acne and even skin tags when combined with baking soda.
Kukui Nut Oil: Aleurites muluccana. This is another oil that is high in linoleic and linolenic essential fatty acids. It is readily absorbed into the skin as well as bing protective making it excellent for skin conditioning after environmental exposure (especially sun exposure). It is also great for for acne, eczema, psoriasis, haemorrhoids, dry, ageing or wrinkled skin and is perfect for people who like spending time outdoors. It doesn’t leave your skin feel in greasy and it good also for chapped skin and for preventing scarring.
Rose Hip Seed Oil: Rosa mosquito. Cold pressed Rose hip is very high in essential fatty acids, GLA, and vitamin C. It is superb for treating skin problems like eczema and psoriasis. It’s a very potent carrier oil that can be used with essential oils added to it as a massage oil or in a skin moisturizer treatment blend. This oil is amazing for treating scarring, lightening stretchmarks, healing burns, softening keloid scars. It can help reduce broken capillaries and is wonderful as an antiaging oil.
Safflower Oil: Safflower oil is found in a wide range of skin care products because of it’s ability to hold in moisture and prevent loss of hydration from the skin. Other “chemical based” ingredients that do this job (known as occlusives) such as mineral oil and lanolin can clog pores and be irritating to the skin. Safflower oil is known to reduce the size of blackheads and whiteheads. It is rich in linoleic acid – an essential fatty acid. Using this oil in your serums and skin care recipes reduces the risk of “clogged” pores that can lead to blackheads and acne outbreaks. It’s also great as a base for salad dressings and does wonders for your skin from the inside out improving the appearance of aging skin. Studies show that a diets high in linoleic acid and vitamin C can significantly improved the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Sesame Oil: Sesame seed oil is rich in vitamin E, so is therefore rich in antioxidants. It also protects skin with a low SPF rating of around SPF 4 like coconut oil and can be mixed with other oils as a protective additive to serums.
Soyabean Oil: This oil is rich in vitamin K making it great for dark circles under the eyes. It is also rich in vitamin E, making it a natural anti-oxidant and essential fatty acids giving it protective and anti-aging properties.
Sunflower Oil: Sunflower oil is light and lovely. Rich in vitamins A, C, D, and E, a high linoleic acid content, this oil is easily absorbed and can be used on all skin types. It is high in vitamin E making it great for delicate or dry skins. It’s also healing and protective and rich in anti-oxidants.

Dilution of Essential oils to use in homemade skin care recipes
Essential oils are very concentrated and should be used at no more then 15 drops (2%) per 2 tablespoons as a general guideline. Always read the bottle for suggested use.
Precautions when using essential oils:
- Essential oils should never be applied undiluted to the skin but instead diluted with a carrier oil, cream or water depending on your skin care recipe or product.
- Always do a patch test before trying your homemade recipe on your skin to test for skin sensitivity by rubbing a little diluted oil in the bend of your elbow and wait 24 hours to see if itching or redness develops.
- Citrus oils in particular are very strong and can cause light sensitivity.
- Store your essential oils away from heat and light. Refrigerate all vegetable oils. Essential oils do expire (usually after two years). Store your oils in bottles with tightly closed lids and out of direct light.
- Particular care must be taken when using essential oils on the young, especially babies, pregnant women and the elderly as they are more likely to be sensitive to essential oils.
- Normal dilution is 2.5%, or 15 drops essential oil to one ounce ( 2 tablespoons) of carrier oil. For spot treatments, and intensive skin treatments.
- Low Dilution by 1%-1.5% or 6-9 drops per 1 tablespoon oil for facial cleansers, serums moisturizers, most skin care blends.
- Extremely low Dilution by 0.5% or 3 drops in 1 tablespoon of carrier oil for eye area and sensitive skins.
