Microdermabrasion is one of the most popular forms of skin renewal treatment available.
Many beauty salons offer microdermabrasion treatments. Yes it is extremely effective in reducing discoloration, scarring and stimulating new cell growth, but not many of us can afford the cost of ongoing treatments to keep our skin looking young and fresh like we want it to.
So what exactly is microdermabrasion, how does it work and why has it always been so expensive?
Microdermabrasion uses tiny granules or crystals to “sand off” or exfoliate the surface and upper layers of your skin. This process is abrasive and essentially “wounds” your epidermis just enough to stimulate your body into producing new skin cells. It generates new cells to replace the layer of skin that has been irritated.
This whole process refines the skin and leaves it feeling polished.
Most people don’t know microdermabrasion skin refining can be done at home using simple ingredients. Used once or twice a week, you can expect the the same results (some say better) as you would get from salon treatments.
Microdermabrasion at home is an inexpensive but just as effective way to get the results you want.
Many of the ingredients used in expensive salon products can be purchased for much less or made at home in ten minutes.
A simple ingredient like demerara sugar not only exfoliates your skin because of it’s texture, but also contains natural glycolic acid – a popular ingredient use in facial peels.
Other additives like papaya, cantaloupe or pineapple contain enzymes that dissolve proteins in dead skin cells and also stimulate new cell growth. So using fruits that contain papain or other enzymes added to your microdermabrasion at home recipe work like a facial peel to further boost the effectiveness and deliver amazing results! Here is how to make your own super powerful recipes for microdermabrasion at home:
Step 1.
I like to start with a basic scrub recipe from the following ingredients depending on what type of skin you have, and then adding fresh ingredients to boost the recipes potency as you use it.
Dry Skin Scrub:
1 1/2 cups demerara sugar (if you don’t have demerara, use brown sugar)
1/2 cup olive, jojoba or Almond oil
1 teaspoon honey
1 tablespoon baking soda
1 teaspoon used coffee grinds (optional)
The demerara sugar contains glycolic acid from sugar cane, the oil is moisturizing as is honey and the coffee grinds deliver vitamins and antioxidants into your skin. Mix these together and store in a jar or other container.
Normal Skin Scrub
1 1/2 cups demerara sugar (if you don’t have demerara, use brown sugar)
1/2 cup Almond oil or 1/4 cup of olive oil and 1/4 cup of water
1 tablespoon baking soda
1 teaspoon used coffee grinds (optional)
Blend as per recipe above and store as directed above.
Acne Skin Scrub (Good for oily skins also)
1 1/2 cups demerara sugar (if you don’t have demerara, use brown sugar)
1/4 cup coconut oil (extra virgin coconut oil or use water)
1 teaspoon lemon juice or apple cider vinegar or grapefruit juice
1 tablespoon honey
4 drops tea tree oil (optional)
Pinch salt
1 tablespoon baking soda
1 teaspoon used coffee grinds (optional)
Blend as per recipe above and store as directed above.
Whitening Lightening Skin Scrub
1 tablespoon yogurt
1 teaspoon crushed peeled cucumber
squeeze lemon juice
1 tsp molasses (optional)
1 tablespoon brown sugar
Mix well and rub onto skin. Leave of for a few minutes then wash off. Used a couple of times a week to lighten skin.
Acne Skin Scrub (Good for oily skins also)
1 1/2 cups demerara sugar (if you don’t have demerara, use brown sugar)
1/4 cup cold chamomile tea
1 teaspoon soy sauce
1 tablespoon honey
1 tablespoon baking soda
Blend as per recipe above and store as directed above.
You can use these recipes on their own but you may need to add a little more liquid (oil or water) to them first. If adding the following ingredients in step 2 they should be moist enough.
Step 2.
When you are ready to use your scrub, now it the time to add the active ingredients for a facial peel boost — add a tablespoon of mashed papaya, cantaloupe, pineapple or kiwifruit to equal amounts of scrub.
Sensitive skins: You can also use apple puree or summer fruits like strawberries or apricots which contain AHA acids and are gentler on your skin.
To boost the lightening/bleaching effect use cucumber or yogurt mix instead or as a combination.
Step 3.
Apply or rub the scrub onto clean dry skin in gentle upwards circular patterns avoiding the delicate eye area for two to 5 minutes. Leave on as a mask for a maximum of ten minutes in total. Wash off with water and a washcloth then pat your skin dry (don’t rub).
Follow with your favorite skin routine. Note; Using aloe vera on skin after this process soothes irritated skin.
So there you have it — an easy and highly effective way to give your skin a treat. Be careful in sunlight for a few weeks making sure you have applied enough sunscreen and moisturizer.
If you still like the idea of using a crystal scrub made of corundum crystals instead of a home made microdermabrasion recipe, the Skin Rx microdermabrasion peel product to my left is a fantastic product.
You can find it (Skin Rx Microdermabrasion 4 Oz) on Amazon
This product has “double peel” technology. It contains microdermabrasion corundum crystals and 10% Glycolic acid in one single product (much like the recipes suggested above).
It is all natural without harsh chemicals, fragrances, oils or drugs! Others on the market have many heavy oils, perfumes, waxes, fragrances and preservative chemicals — this one has all of the good with none of the bad.
A safe, effective, affordable alternative to chemical, laser or surgical procedures and is safe to use with other products.
