Yogurt for skin masks is not a new concept. Yogurt been used for centuries to moisturize and lighten skin in facial masks, exfoliants and cleansers.
The benefits of yogurt for skin masks include:
- Moisturizing; yogurt contains lactic acid, which has a mild bleaching effect on skin.
- Environmentally damaged skin; It is good for tender environmentally effected skin that has been exposed to sun sea and wind etc. Yogurt is known to help heal damaged skin.
- Acne and bacterial imbalance; yogurt makes an excellent base to add antibacterial ingredients like honey, coconut oil or tea tree oil to. Other essential oils can be added to a basic yogurt mask like lavender (soothing and antibacterial) or oatmeal – another soothing softening ingredient.
Yogurt is low cost and so versatile to use in skin masks. Simply add to a cup of yogurt any of the following ingredients to make a mask:
Dry Skin Yogurt Mask: (Also an excellent hair conditioner and for people with dandruff if you add a few drops of tea tree oil).
- 1/2 cup yogurt (or whipping cream)
- 1 teaspoon honey (hydrating and conditioning)
- 1/4 mashed avocado or 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/4 cups ground oatmeal
Mix these ingredients together thoroughly, apply to skin. If you want to use this an an exfoliator rub on in circular motion for a couple of minutes, otherwise just apply gently with your fingertips. Leave on for approximately ten minutes before washing off.
Yogurt Acne Skin Mask:
- 1/2 cup yogurt
- few drops tea tree and/or lavender oil (this really deals to acne bacteria) alternatively use a pinch of turmeric or anise powder
- 1 teaspoon honey (hydrating and conditioning)
- 1/2 teaspoon apple cider vinegar (alternatively use aloe vera, lemon or apple juice)
- 1/4 mashed avocado or 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/4 cups ground oatmeal (optional, oatmeal soothes inflamed skin)
Mix these ingredients together thoroughly, apply to skin. Leave on for approximately ten minutes before washing off.
Use this mask twice a week for acneic or oily skin and you will notice a reduction in spots, pore size and inflammation.
