Home made facial masks and recipes with arrowroot for oily skin
Arrowroot is derived from the plant Maranta arundinacea, also known as obedience plant , Bermuda arrowroot, araru, or ararao. It is a large, perennial herb found in rainforest habitats mainly in the Americas.
It’s root is high in starch and so it popular for use in cooking for thickening sauces, stews and condiments. What most people don’t realise is that arrowroot is also excellent for use in homemade facial masks especially those for oily and blemished skins.
Arrowroot absorbs excess oil from the skin and reduces shine while helping to close pores. When used with other natural anti bacterial ingredients like honey, tea tree oil and coconut oil it makes a very powerful remedy for targeting acne and inflamed skin.
Arrowroot is also good for soothing itchy skin and is very effective when used with oatmeal for soothing itchy skin along or for relief from rashes and insect bites. It is an especially good natural remedy for itching from chicken pox and poison ivy rash.
Here are three excellent recipes, one for acneic skin, the second is for itchy inflamed or rash effected skin and the third is a toner/spritzer.
Arrowroot For Oily Skin Or Acne Facemask:
1 tablespoon honey (soothing and antibacterial while moisturizing)
3 drops lavender or tea tree oil (anti bacterial and anti microbial)
1 teaspoon arrowroot powder
Blend ingredients well and apply to cleansed skin. Leave on for 5 to 10 minutes and then rinse off.
You can also add apple cider vinegar to help balance the ph of your skin or aloe vera juice to this recipe.
Soothing Itchy Skin Mask:
1 tablespoon of arrowroot powder
1 bag of oatmeal
3 drops of lavender oil (optional)
6 cups of cooled chamomile tea (or use water if you don’t have chamomile tea)
Soak oatmeal in liquid then strain out oat flakes, add other ingredients and sponge liquid over effected areas (or add the whole lot to the bath). This is very soothing especially for children who have chicken pox or other viral rashes.
Spritzer Toner For Acne Or Oily Skin:
1 cup of cold chamomile tea
3 drops lavender and/or tea tree oil (essential oils are antibacterial)
1/4 cup aloe vera gel or juice or 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar (optional)
1/2 teaspoon of arrowroot
Mix well in a bottle (shake well) and then spritz on face for a cooling oil reduction spritz.
This is a simple recipe that you can adapt by adding cucumber juice or other ingredients depending on what you want to achieve for your skin.
