Exfoliators are the treatment our skin looks forward to every week.
Exfoliating products lift off dead skin cells and rejuvenate a dull tired complexion.
Exfoliating cleansers and scrubs are available in two forms: mechanical or granule based exfoliation and chemical.
Here is a breakdown of what each does:
Granule or mechanical Exfoliation:
These are products that contain husks, seeds, beads or crystals that physically scrub off dead skin layers. Common examples are: ground apricot husks, walnut husks, seeds, oatmeal, jojoba beads, salt, sugar or crystals.
These can be fairly harsh on your skin – which isn’t a problem for those of us with normal skin, but can irritate people with sensitive fragile complexions. These are usually the cheapest form of exfoliation with the exception of conundrum crystals used in microdermabrasion.
Acid and Enzyme Chemical Exfoliation:
These work by chemically removing dirt, skin and impurities from your skin through a process similar to a mini peel. AHA acids, lactic acids and enzymes are in these types of products. Commonly used ingredients are: fruit acids, papain (from papaya) enzyme, malic and lactic acid from dairy and other acidic fruits.
These also stimulate new cell growth so some people prefer these types of exfoliation ingredients to granule options.
Many natural ingredients can be used to exfoliate your skin. Something as simple as grapefruit, lemon or orange juice mixed with brown sugar and almond or olive oil can make a fantastic and very effective natural facial or body scrub.
Exfoliating your skin once or twice a week can make a huge difference to how your skin looks and feels. And there is no need to spend a great deal of money and time on achieving this routine.
